Mucinous Carcinoma of the Breast


Abstract
Mucinous carcinoma of the breast is relatively rare among the malignant breast lesion. It is distinctive pathological and behavioral characteristics to separate from other types of breast earcinomas. According to the WHO definition, mucinous
carcinoma
of the breast is a carcinoma containing large amounts of extracellular epithelial mucus, sufficient to be visible grossly, and recognizable microscpically surrounding and within tumor cells.
It is divided into two types, pure mucinous type and mixed type, by whether or not including component of invasive ductal carcinoma. The prognosis of the pure mucinous type is better than that of mixed type.
Forty four year-old female patient had a small mass palpable in upper outer quardant of right breast which gradually enlarged. At the time of admission, the mass was measured 5cm¡¿3cm, which was lobulated and mobile, and axillary node was
negative.
Mammography and sonography revealed no findings suggesting malignancy.
On frozen section analysis, there were findings of mucinous carcinoma, so Auchincloss type of modified radical mastectomy was done.
